Use Bilingual Skills To Talk Your Way Into A Bigger Paycheck

Use Bilingual Skills To Talk Your Way Into A Bigger PaycheckUse Bilingual Skills To Talk Your Way Into A Bigger PaycheckFor anyone navigating the choppy waters of todays job marketplace, its getting mora difficult to find points of differentiation that make you stand out. Fluency in a foreign language is one skill in high demand across almost every job channel. Its time to buckle down, hit the books and learn that second language. Why are employers so excited about bilingual employees?Employees with language skills tend to understand a multicultural audience and engage well with people from different backgrounds, both inside and outside of the workplace. With a growing population of non-native English speakers in the United States, it is increasingly important for companies with customer-facing departments to hire workers who can effectively communicate with their customer base. As a bonus, employees who know a second language demonstrate significantly improved cognitive problem-solvi ng skills that can aid in all aspects of their jobs.Look to the statisticsAccording to the Center for Digital Education, approximately 80 percent of Americans can speak only English. With such a narrow set of bilingual speakers, you can see that a resume boasting two or more languages stands out in the pool of candidates. The research also shows that 41 percent of companies pay candidates an average of 11 percent more for this skill. If you are looking to climb the ladder of success all the way to the top, language studies can provide an extra boost.Where to begin?Youre ready to revamp your resume, widen your skill set and improve your linguistic range. Now what? There are many language learning options out there, but some find that learning a foreign language as an adult is much more difficult than picking it up in as a child. One of the best ways to learn a foreign language is through conversational skills. While audio guides and DVDs can help with pronunciation and grammar, the o nly way to truly make a new language flow as freely as your native tongue is to speak it over and over again. Private tutors can be found more easily than ever online, with websites that now streamline the process of matching you with a great instructor for your learning style. A live and interactive language tutor can set attainable goals, monitor your progress and adjust lesson plans to compensate for your strengths and weaknesses. Whichever route you decide to go, stop putting it off and start now. How the movie the Matrix will help you make choices

How the movie the Matrix will help you make choicesHow the movie the Matrix will help you make choicesThats the choice that Neo faces in the movieThe Matrix. The rebel leader Morpheus tells him that if he takes the blue pill, the story ends. Neo will wake up in his bed and believe whatever he wants to believe. But if he takes the red pill, Morpheus tells Neo, you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.Neo chooses the red pill, and the veil quickly drops. He realizes that hes been living in a fabricated reality called the Matrix- a prison for the mind created by machines to harvest energy from humans. Everything he sees- from his clothes to his job- is an illusion created to blind him from the truth. In life, most of us take the blue pill. Day after day, we choose the illusion of certainty rather than the messy reality of uncertainty. As a result, facts become dispensable, and misinformation and pseudoscience thrive. If the powers-that-be already decided that we use only 10% of ur brains or that dietary cholesterol is inexorably bad for you, we can move on. Theres no reason to rock the boat. The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, as the late Stephen Hawking said, it is the illusion of knowledge. The pretense of knowledge closes our ears and shuts off incoming educational signals from outside sources. Certainty blinds us to our own paralysis. The more we speak our version of the truth, preferably with passion and exaggerated hand gestures, the more our egos inflate to the size of skyscrapers- concealing whats underneath.Taking the red pill requires an admission of ignorance and a good dose of humility. When we utter those three dreaded words- I dont know- our ego deflates, our mind opens, and our ears perk up. Admitting ignorance doesnt mean remaining wilfully oblivious to facts. Rather, it requires a conscious type of ignorance where you become fully aware of what you dont know in buchen to learn and grow. The problem with the mod ern world, as Bertrand Russell put it, is that the stupid are cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubt. Even after he earned a Nobel prize, the physicist Richard Feynman thought of himself as a confused ape and approached everything around him with the same level of curiosity, enabling him to see nuances that others dismissed. I would rather have questions that cant be answered, he remarked, than answers that cant be questioned.Yes, taking the red pill may reveal things that you dont want to see.But its far better to be uncomfortably uncertain than comfortably wrong.Ozan Varol is a rocket scientist turned law professor and bestselling author.Click hereto download a free copy of his e-book, The Contrarian Handbook 8 Principles for Innovating Your Thinking. Avoid Scams When Using Money Making Smartphone Apps

Avoid Scams When Using Money Making Smartphone AppsAvoid Scams When Using Money Making Smartphone AppsThis list of 9 ways to make money with your phone includes nifty little apps that allow you to earn cash in your spare time by participating in crowdsourcing, social media advertising, shopping rewards, loyalty programs, surveys, and other micro jobs. People can most certainly earn money at ansicht, but before you try, read about a few pitfalls of these apps. Go in With Realistic Expectations You have to look at these as ways to makeextra money but notlage a lot of money. They are not a way to earn a living. A few of the crowdsourcing apps highlight participants who make hundreds of dollars a month, but that is rare.Mostly these are ways to help defray the cost of your smartphone or to save money on items you would buy anyway. That said, these can mean extra cash in your pocket, just keep in mind that Time Is Money and Gas Isnt Free Be mindful of your time and expenses when u sing these apps. Many of these crowdsourcing tasks, particularly the shopping ones, pay so little that you could spend mora on gas than you make. If you live in a densely populated area, there likely will be more tasks offered that are easy for you to get to. On the flip side, in these areas, there will be more competition for the jobs. In many of these crowdsourcing sites, participants must build a better reputation for completing tasks to have access to more tasksmaking it harder for newcomers. If these apps can be used within your daily routinewhile waiting at the doctor or while shoppingthe time is not as much of an issue. If you have to drive out of your way, then you have to calculate whether it is truly worth it. Beware of Spending Money to Make Money Some of the rewards-based programs may either require or tempt you to spend money in order to receive the rewards. Be careful that you dont spend more than you earn. And be sure that those programs that dont pay in cash but with rewards (gift cards, discounts, etc.) wont cause you to spend money you otherwise wouldnt. Fees Can Eat Up Your Profit Any company that charges you a fee of any sort to participate in its program I suspect is a scam and should be avoided. However, there are other possible costs that can eat into your profitsnamely PayPal fees. Sure, its nice when a place pays you immediately for each job no matter how small, but if PayPal charges you a fee for each tiny payment, that can reduce your profit significantly. Some companies will absorb the PayPal fees others pay out in gift cards. Investigate the fees before you sign up. Payout Threshold Pros and Cons Payout thresholds are when a company requires that you earn a certain amount before it will pay out your earnings. Sometimes these can mean that if you are earning only a few bucks (or a few cents) per job, you may give up before you reach the payout threshold, which might be as high as $50. So that is definitely a con. However , believe it or not, there are pros to payout thresholds. As mentioned earlier, PayPal fees can eat up small payments. Some companies will allow you to adjust your payout threshold in order to help you avoid repeated fees. Always investigate the payout threshold of any company that pays small amounts, whether its mystery shopping, surveys, crowdsourcing sites or any of these money-making apps for your cell phone.

Congratulations Emails for a Job Well Done

Congratulations Emails for a Job Well Done Congratulations Emails for a Job Well Done When someone on your staff, or one of your colleagues, achieves success on a particular project, it’s important to give them the recognition they deserve. It’s easy to send a quick congratulatory email message to let them know their work was noticed in a positive light. Remember that responding immediately to the completion of the project will make your recognition even more appreciated. People like to know that what they are doing is being noticed and that their impact is of a high enough priority to get your swift attention. How to Write a Congratulations Email Include “Congratulations” or “Thank You” in your subject line  to make sure the recipient knows the content of the message and ensure the server delivers it to the appropriate file. Messages with blank subject lines often end up in a junk folder. Begin your message with a salutation. Usually, “Dear Name” is the appropriate way to begin the thread, with “Hi Name” or simply “Name” or just beginning your reply for further communications in the same thread. Follow your salutation with a concise, direct paragraph or two regarding the specifics of the completed job. You should use a polite closing. You don’t need to include contact information  unless it is a part of your normal email signature. If there are follow up replies, the closing can become less formal in subsequent messages. What to Include in a Congratulations Email In your message, you can mention the completed project with a couple of details about the specific elements the person worked on and the impact of their input. Be sure to thank them for their hard work and wish them continued success. If there is someone else at the company (like a supervisor or upper management) who should know what a great job the person did, be sure to copy them on the message.   Although it may be tempting to send an even quicker congratulations text, stick with email for this reason. It may have a positive impact for them during their employee review for a salary increase and/or promotion, and the email can be added to their HR file. Consider these examples of congratulation email messages to send to a person who has done a good job. Job Well Done Email #1 Subject: Well Done!Dear Emily,What a fabulous job you did with the store renovations! I am especially pleased that you found a way to restructure the spending so we can allocate more for professional training for the staff. You did an excellent job, and I really appreciate the time you spent on this.Sincerely,Jack Expand Expressing Appreciation Of course, there are many reasons you will want to share congratulations with your employees and colleagues. Email is usually the quickest and easiest way to send your message, but sometimes a traditional handwritten note can convey a more personal touch. Under some circumstances, a business letter is a more appropriate way to express your congratulations and thanks. Business Communication With any written communication, it’s important to make sure that you proofread your message before you send it. Even if your colleague also is  a friend, your work-related emails should contain correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Many times, business communication ends up getting forwarded in whole or part to other employees, sometimes by accident, and you should make sure everything you write is appropriate and correct.

Mindfulness in the workplace is the rejuvenation you need

Mindfulness in the workplace is the rejuvenation you need Mindfulness in the workplace is the rejuvenation you need Work can be rewarding: It builds confidence, gives you an opportunity to make a difference, grows your skills and talents - and you make money on top of it!But it can also lead to stress and exhaustion. In fact, according to a recent American Psychological Association survey, workplace stress affects 58% of Americans. So what can we do about it, aside from torching our work clothes, going off the grid and living off the land? A common and proven practice is called mindfulness, and it’s one that many employers have adopted, including Google, Procter Gamble, McKinsey Company and Apple. So What is Mindfulness? To learn more about mindfulness in the workplace, I spoke with Erin O’Neill, people culture manager at The Penny Hoarder.“My definition of mindfulness echoes that of Jon Kabat-Zinn, who I think really nails it,” O’Neill told me. “For me, mindfulness is being 100% present in a given moment without judgment - paying attention on purpose, to yourself, to someone else ne eding your attention, to your work, to your kids, to your life. Mindfulness in the workplace cultivates calm, kindness, compassion and the ability not only to do your best work, but to be your best self. It’s a powerhouse for potential.”Essentially, mindfulness is awareness in the moment. It’s looking past the ringing phones, the email alerts and the constant brain activity you’re doing to plan your day to truly focus on what is happening now.How Does Mindfulness Work?Kabat-Zinn, whom O’Neill praised, established mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) in the 70s. This widely recognized practice combines two methodologies - “that of science, medicine, and psychology, on the one hand, and that of Buddhist meditative traditions and their teachings and practices, known collectively as the Dharma, on the other.Ӊ€œEmployees can practice mindfulness every day simply by finding a place to just breathe and focus on that,” O’Neill explained. “It can be eight minutes, it can be one minute. The challenge with mindfulness is that it takes practice and dedication. Eight minutes is currently the suggested optimal amount of time needed daily (over eight weeks) to retrain your brain into a more mindful state - to be present in the exact moment and focus solely on that moment, that project, that conversation, that meeting. I often suggest baby steps - one minute everyday as a gift to yourself to just breathe.”The Penny Hoarder instituted wellness practices like “mindful moments” over a year ago. Each day, employees take eight minutes and focus their attention on their breath and quieting their minds. “We started our mindfulness program after implementing Gallup’s StrengthsFinders. Part of the process was interviewing the entire staff individually, and some of the words and phrases I kept hearing (in relation to a question about challenges we face) were similar: never-ending to-do list, need more hours in a day, so busy, moving so fast. I rea lized at that moment that part of supporting our people… was a method of bringing calm when needed.”Forbes.com lists a couple other simple mindfulness exercises to retrain your brain, like becoming aware of the temperature of your skin and the background noises or slowing your pace when walking enough to notice the ground against your feet. What are the Benefits of Mindfulness in the Workplace?Eight minutes a day from some, if not all, employees is quite an investment because, as they say, time is money. So I asked O’Neill if mindful moments were truly that valuable.“So. Much. Value. Can I talk in terms of value as humans first, before employers and employees?” she asked (which is just the kind of question a good HR employee should ask). “Mindfulness allows people the ability to respond instead of react and to incorporate that ability into the way they communicate, collaborate and operate on the planet, in the workplace, at home, at the grocery store. Using mindfulness te chniques leads to increased empathy, kindness and compassion.”O’Neill also explained the employer and employee benefits. Mindfulness reduces unhealthy conflict, eliminates or shortens unnecessary meetings, leads to better prioritizing and increases productivity. Most importantly, it reduces stress for those 58% of Americans who are plagued by it at work each day.My Own Mindfulness ExperimentAs a highly anxious person who juggles a full-time gig, freelance work, nonprofit board responsibilities, a family and an active social life with friends, it’s fair to say I could benefit from some mindfulness at work. After speaking with O’Neill, I gave it a shot.Eight minutes proved challenging - I only lasted six and a half. But as O’Neill said, “baby steps.”I sat at my desk in my home office and stared out my window into the backyard, watching the wind in the trees, birds take dives in a rainstorm and the garbage truck empty my bins. I became acutely aware of the hum of my comp uter, the whir of my ceiling fan and the obnoxious sound of my dog cleaning himself.Sure, at moments I got distracted from present mindfulness. I saw a tree out back that is one storm away from falling onto our driveway and reminded myself that I need to arrange to have it removed, and I frequently found myself having epiphanies about how calm I felt and planning what I would write for this article (this sentence included). But for the most part, I focused on the present and felt an amazing calm. My body felt relaxed and my head clear afterward - and this was only day one.Interested in learning more about mindfulness? Jon Kabat-Zinn himself is a good start, but the internet is full of resources and even apps to help you on your quest to becoming more mindful.Timothy Moore is a full-time editor and freelance writer. How to respectfully use gender neutral pronouns in the office

How to respectfully use gender neutral pronouns in the office How to respectfully use gender neutral pronouns in the office How we address one another is a basic yet monumental way of showing respect at work. Whenever you join a new office or are recruiting a new teammate, you may encounter new gender identities and expressions that do not fit into the boxes of “she” and “he.” While some transgender employees identify on a binary scale, others do not and adopt more fluid pronouns. For employees that do not identify as male or female, a “they” may be appropriate.

How to Self Promote Successfully

How to Self Promote Successfully How to Self Promote Successfully 1It̢۪s a delicate dance. You want to talk about your past and present accomplishments. But say too much and you̢۪re a bragger. Don̢۪t say anything at all and no one knows about the great work you̢۪ve done. So how do you self promote successfully? Working Mother Magazine recently tackled this tricky topic. They offered tips on How to Toot Your Horn, whether you̢۪re gainfully employed or an active job seeker. We looked at their tips and thought about how they could be relevant to job seekers or telecommuters. Do Your Job Well When you telecommute, it can be tricky to make your accomplishments known. Keeping your lines of communication strong, exhibiting excellent follow-through on projects, using all the technology tools offered to be present and engaged, and collaborating with others when you can are all great ways to show your skill and commitment. Telecommuters can impress on conference calls with some forethought and strategy in place. Pitch In When you see a project coming together that you are interested in, throw your hat in the ring to be a part of it. If you hear a colleague saying they are a bit overwhelmed or struggling with their workload, offer to help out. Chances are, they will thank you for your efforts publicly especially if you have done the same for others. This concept works just as well in a virtual world it takes a little more effort and communication, but its totally doable. Put It In Writing We found this one particularly crucial for those looking for a job especially the idea of using your social media profiles. For example, update your LinkedIn profile with short accounts of your successes. When hiring managers screen your profile, they are sure to read about how you saved your previous company millions in a merger, or how you implemented a successful flexible schedule policy in your department. Reading about your past work experience may be just what motivates him to call you in for an interview. Overall, it̢۪s a good idea to self promote, especially if you̢۪re looking for a job. Just keep your stories short, sweet and, most of all, humble. That way, your work- and your work ethic- speaks for itself. Readers, have you struggled with how to self promote? How have you handled it during job interviews? Let us know in the comments section below!

How to Understand Modeling Contracts

How to Understand Modeling Contracts How to Understand Modeling Contracts Whether your sights are set on a small, local agency or a top international one, it’s every model’s dream to land a modeling contract. After all, signing on the dotted line means your modeling career is officially real! But as exciting as they are, modeling contracts can be very intimidating, especially if you’re new to the business. To ease your nerves and help you through the process, here are a few basic things you need to know about modeling contracts: The Basics Every modeling agency has its own unique contract so it’s impossible to know exactly what to expect. Some are 2 pages long and some are 6, and the content is always tailored to a particular agency’s needs. This, combined with the fact that modeling contracts are legally binding documents usually with confidentiality clauses, makes them all the more mysterious. (That’s why it’s nearly impossible to find a real modeling contract online, especially one from a big-name agency like Elite or IMG Models).   That said, the general terms and conditions of modeling contracts can be quite similar. After getting the basics out of the way, such as the name of the agency, the agency’s address, and your name, the contract then goes on to state the specific terms. You’ll probably be presented with details on things like: The type of contract: Whether it’s an exclusive, non-exclusive, mother agency, one-time only, or another type of contract. The model/agency relationship: Modeling agencies act as personal managers, not employment agencies. They can’t guarantee work, but they can guide all aspects of the model’s career, from the best job opportunities and photographers to publicity and public relations.Compensation: How much the model and agency will earn per booking.Behavior: The model must agree to conduct him or herself in a respectable manner, to not harm the agency’s reputation in any way, and to comply with all terms of the agreement. Self-employment: A gentle reminder that models are contractors, not employees, and are therefore responsible for paying their own taxes (income and otherwise). The length of the contract: How long the terms of the contract are binding, as well as details on automatic contract renewals and termination procedures. Should You Hire a Lawyer? It’s always a good idea to consult a lawyer before entering into a modeling contract (or any contract, for that matter), especially if it’s your first one. That way, you can be 100% sure of what you’re agreeing to. Plus, you can learn a lot about an agency by gauging their reaction to your request for more time. If they pressure you to sign right away instead of letting you take a few days to review the contract and show it to a lawyer, that should raise some red flags.   That said, lawyers are expensive and not everyone can afford to get professional legal counsel. If that’s the case, read the contract carefully, learn as much as you can about modeling contracts, talk to former/current models, or industry professionals such as the agents at ModelScouts.com, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. A reputable agency will always be more than happy to clarify the things you don’t understand.   How Long Do Modeling Contracts Last? That depends on the type of contract, but usually, it’s anywhere from one to three years. It’s also important to note that contracts don’t magically end on their expiry date. Usually, they automatically renew unless you provide the agency with the proper termination notice (usually 30 - 60 days written notice).

4 Ways You Can Take Charge of Your Career Growth

4 Ways You Can Take Charge of Your Career Growth 4 Ways You Can Take Charge of Your Career Growth When you think about career growth, do you also think about that coworker who doesnt work as hard as you, whos not quite as intelligent as you, but who keeps getting promoted- and you dont? Is she the bosss niece? Does she have dirt on the VP of sales? Is the head of human resources her die-hard fan? Or is she just attacking her career from a different perspective? She might have some inside connection, but its more likely that shes just personally taking responsibility for her career development, while youre waiting for someone else to show you the way. Its logical to expect your boss to give you a promotion when youve earned one. Its also logical to expect the HR department to have a succession plan in place that involves promotions at all levels- including yours. But if you want to experience career growth, you need to take matters into your own hands. Speak Up When an Opportunity Arises Employees would like to think that promotion decisions are made based on merit, but managers are imperfect people and they often make assumptions. For instance, the manager may think, “Jane probably doesnt want that senior trainer position because it requires lots of travel and she has little kids at home.” Now, this assumption could violate gender discrimination laws, but that doesnt mean that subtle discrimination doesnt happen. So speak up. When an opportunity arises that youre interested in, say something to your manager and express your interest. Keep in mind that you probably have skills and interests that your boss knows nothing about. She wont know about them either if you dont tell her. If you have an interest in a new area or in managing people, let her know. Otherwise, she may pass you up for an employee who does speak up. Speak Up Before an Opportunity Arises Sometimes a colleague gets promoted or a new hire comes in for a job you never even knew existed- a job you would have applied for if youd known about it. How can you get these hidden jobs? By speaking up sooner rather than later. This doesnt mean that you need to bombard your boss with information on how youd like to proceed with your career, but it does mean letting her know the paths youre interested in. Your annual review is a great time to talk about these things. As youre setting your goals for the next year, talk about what you want to do and ask for assignments that will help you achieve this. If you want to manage people, tell your boss and ask her to make you the team leader on a project. If you want to move from tax accounting to auditing, ask if you can work with any special projects or cross-functional teams. Find Out What Training You Need and Pursue It People often talk about the importance of having a mentor, and this is one of the reasons. Find a coworker who currently has the position youre targeting and ask, “What do I need to do to end up where you are?” Listen and do those things. Some of that training may include work experience, and some may come from classroom learning. For instance, some jobs favor people with MBAs. If you want that type of job, youd better go back to school. If you want to become a high school principal, your bachelors degree in math education probably wont cut it. If you want to become the head of HR  one day, you might want to pursue an SPHR certification, a masters degree in HR, or an MBA. Some career paths dont require formal certifications or degrees, so spending your time on them is great academically but wont necessarily advance your career. Thats why you should ask the people who are doing the jobs that you think youd like to do. Reach Outside Your Comfort Zone Dont ever sit back and wait for someone else to notice that youd do a great job in a higher-level position. Volunteer for challenges, like serving on special projects and cross-functional teams that open you up to new possibilities. Also, remember to build relationships outside your direct line of reporting. Always work hard and be pleasant to coworkers. If you have an interest in moving to a new department, work on developing a relationship with the department head. Ultimately, your career growth is your responsibility, so take charge! - Suzanne Lucas is a freelance journalist specializing in Human Resources. 5 Tips for Your First Day on the Job

5 Tips for Your First Day on the Job 5 Tips for Your First Day on the Job Your first day on the job can be a stressful experience. Depending on your industry, it takes an average of two to eight months to find a new job. All the curveball questions, LinkedIn advice, emails, and interviews are exhausting. The last thing you want to do is go through that experience again anytime soon. Still, the work has only just begun! Below we offer these tips to make your first day on the job a pleasant experience. We start with what happens the night before... 1. Get a good night's sleep First impressions last forever. The last thing you want to do is start your first day on the job exhausted, cranky and unable to process new information. Your first day requires an alert brain. You will be absorbing information on what you will be doing and who you are working with. A good night's sleep helps you improve your memory, stay creative, and helps you think on your feet. You need to be sharp on your first day! If you cannot sleep, avoid taking medication that will leave you drowsy in the morning. Instead, release yourself from the stress of your job search. Remind yourself why you took the job in the first place and why they hired you. Better yet, spend some time deleting emails from job boards. Turn down interviews, too, because you do not need that right now. Focus on starting your new job tomorrow well-rested! 2. Dress in your favorite work outfit You want to feel comfortable for your first day on the job and keep yourself smiling as you meet new people. When you are overdressed or wearing clothes that choke you, your new co-workers may sense you are trying too hard. They would rather see you confident, comfortable, and approachable on your first day. More on what to wear your first day on the job. 3. Get to your new job early...but not TOO early There is a saying I was once told at a new job: “Early is on time. On time is late. Late is unacceptable. But too early is just plain awkward.” That was said to me on my first day at a job many years ago. I had shown up to work an hour early to fill out paperwork. No one was there except for the people from maintenance and the mailroom. No one knew me, but I was wandering around the office looking for the person who hired me. My new boss told me he appreciated the effort. But he also felt like I had rushed him because I was standing there waiting before he even put down his coat...on a Monday morning! Having a great work ethic and being punctual is important, but so is the ability to show balance. Extreme behavior or social awkwardness can make colleagues uncomfortable. 4. Go to lunch with staff Your co-workers want to get to know you better. If you get invited to lunch your first day on the job, accept the invite. You are learning more about your colleagues and you are showing yourself to be part of the team. At the same time, you are beginning to learn what your work regimen will entail. More than anything, you are being polite and courteous. It is also a good idea to prepare some things to talk about with others. 5. Make the first day all about listening and absorbing It is your first day, new job and you want to impress people. You want to show them you can contribute at the new job. Yet, the worst thing you can do is start talking over others, correcting them, or coming off as a know-it-all. You may know “what to contribute”, but not “how to contribute it”. You do not know their work environment. Talking over people and correcting them leaves others concerned you will be argumentative. Even if you are the smartest man or woman, you do not know the people talking to you. Make your first day at a new job all about listening and absorbing what is happening. Before talking, wait for them to ask you a question. You are showing your colleagues you respect them. After all, they have the knowledge about your new company. It is only your first day!

Five Tips for Nailing that Multi-Person Interview

Five Tips for Nailing that Multi-Person Interview Five Tips for Nailing that Multi-Person Interview From “super-sized” fast food meals to luxury cars large enough to fit an entire family of 10, plus their dog, modern trends have seen us embracing largesse in pretty much any venue.  While we’re keen to try to tackle that 20 scoops hot fudge sundae we saw on Food Network, when it comes to interviewing bigger certainly isn’t always better. Group interviews, in which one candidate meets simultaneously with two or more interviewers, can be a daunting experience for the unprepared.  If you’re facing the prospect of being outnumbered in the interview room, we’ve got a few solid pieces of advice that will help you build confidence and put you on a level playing field in order to score that job of your dreams. 1. Keep Those Eyes Moving Whether it’s a social conversation or a formal business sit down, making eye contact is a sure-fire way to make genuine connections and leave a lasting impression.  We’re not talking long and drawn out staring sessions here.  A few moments of eye-to-eye meet and greet while the interview is speaking or while you are answering a question can go a long way towards seeming honest, confidence and approachable; just the thing needed to set you apart from a crowded interview pool. 2. Get the Names Straight One of the most difficult tasks during your interview will be remembering who’s who.  Remembering names of people you meet is an attractive and useful quality, but can be difficult when you add in the stress and pressure of the interview environment and multiple participants to boot.  Bring a notepad along with you to the interview and, when given names, write them inconspicuously at the top from left to right in the position your interviewers are located in relation to you.  Don’t worry about your notes being seen as your company will appreciate your commitment to detail and professionalism which can help score much-needed bonus points in your candidate ranking. 3. Engage Everyone at the Table It’s a given that we’re bound to make stronger connections with some people over others.  While this is what helps set apart lasting friendships from mere acquaintances in the social world, at the interview table candidates should strive to give everyone their fair share of the conversation.  Try to engage each person’s questions equally and distribute your time and attention across all interviewers.  If you want to score big extra stars and come off looking like a pro, try to bring in and cross-reference points or questions made by multiple interviewers, making references back or mentioning how your answer to Mr. X’s question is similar to that of Mrs. Y.  Critical thinking skills for the win! 4. Individual Research Just because you’ll participating in a group interview doesn’t mean you’re off the hook for conducting research on the individual participants.  Having background knowledge on education, work, experience or basic social profiles of your interviewers can help set you apart from the interviewee crowd.  Typically, taking a quick glance at their page on the company website will be more than sufficient and probably expected by the interviewers themselves. 5. Follow up with Everyone as Individuals Last but not least, when it comes to nailing that multi-person interview the thank you letters and follow-ups are often a candidate’s best shot of putting the icing on your career superstar cake.  Be sure to send individual follow-ups to each person you met with.  You should make these emails unique as interviewees will often share their responses between each other.  Try to pick out individual questions, comments or interactions you had with the specific person to show that you have attention to detail and that you were engaged during the interview process. Multi-person interviews don’t have to be a daunting experience.  With a little practice and planning, meeting with multiple company managers or representatives can be an efficient and productive interview technique.  Use our tactics and suggestions above and remember to show up prepared for the best chance at scoring that callback or offer letter for your next big career milestone.
